Counselling for Men: Men’s Mental & Physical Health Issues

Counselling for Men: Men’s Mental & Physical Health Issues

Men often struggle with their emotions and they are known to be reluctant and uncomfortable to talk about them. They often hide their true feelings out of fear of being regarded as weak or needy.

However, it is important to look after yourself and the healthy & responsible thing to do is to seek help when you feel depressed, anxious or are experiencing other negative distressing emotions. At Adelaide Counselling Practice we have experienced and supportive counsellors who will listen to you and who can assist you in improving your mental health.

Anxiety and depression are quite normal and common amongst men. One in eight men will experience depression and one in five men will experience anxiety at some stage in their lives, so please know that you are not alone in how you feel.

It can be stressful, daunting, and difficult to deal with everyday challenges such as relationships, work, study, illness, and grief & loss. Sometimes things can get on top of you, and this can negatively affect your quality of life, your relationships with others and your physical & mental health.

Men also often avoid seeking medical guidance & treatment even when they are in pain or show undeniable symptoms. As a result, many men experience worsening of symptoms and additional mental and physical health issues in their lives.  According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, one in two Australian men suffer one or more chronic diseases.

A prolonged physical illness or condition can have a devastating effect on your mental health. Also, it can trigger existing mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression and make them worse.

For some men it may be tempting to cope by using alcohol or other drugs which ultimately will make you feel worse and cause additional problems in various areas of your life.
